Chequers Golf Day Jacket

So in the spirit of Augusta's famous green jacket - as won by my namesake last week (no relation, you can tell from my golf swing) - we have decided we should have our very own check jacket for the winner of The Chequers golf day.

It's amazing the quality you can find in charity shops these days - we'll just have to hope the winner can fit in a 40" chest jacket.

Spare a thought for whoever comes last - they get a Jimmy Tarbuck golfing nightmares video.

Chequers Golf Day

The Chequers Golf Day is being held at Badgemore Park, Henley on Friday 29 April.

We have tee time booked between 11AM and 12 Noon - price will be £30 with coffee and bacon rolls beforehand. If everyone chips in a couple of quid extra we can then also arrange some silly prizes.

All welcome - speak to Tom or Charlie for further details - or sign up at the pub.

Depending on the situation with food at the pub we hope to arrange a meal afterwards - watch this space.

Easter Egg Hunt

We just about managed to dodge Storm Katie and the Easter Egg Hunt at The Chequers was a great success - it wasn't looking too clever first thing on Monday but by 11AM the weather had improved.

Thanks to all who came along - hope you all enjoyed yourselves - and as ever thanks for the lovely cakes people brought along.

Easter Egg Hunt 2016

We are holding the Easter Egg Hunt this nyear on Easter Monday, 28 March at The Chequers at 11AM.

Even though Easter is early this year, hopefully the weather will be as kind to us as last year.

All welcome as ever - the more the merrier - even if you have grown out of hunting for eggs. Come along for a chat and some tea/coffee or perhaps something stronger (it is a pub after all).

As ever any offers of help, cake making etc are always welcome.

Please can we say no unaccompanied kids.

We prefer not to charge but please make a donation on the day towards the cost of this and future events.

Football Goals

After the saga of the "home-made" goal posts last year, it was great to see the new goal posts in use on the common last week for the first.

I gather we all have Jean Galliven to thank for sorting this out and lets home they get many years of use on the common.

Village Picnic / Fun Day 2015

We are planning on having our annual village picnic on the common again this year - Saturday 18 July. Should be dropping leaflets round to everyone in the next few days,

As ever anyone who would be able to help organising things or setting up/clearing up on the day would be greatly appreciated.

North Track

Residents on the North Track across Wheeler End Common have long maintained the track with voluntary contributions; they are currently looking at the options for longer terms solutions to the problems with the track.

Anyone interested should speak to Graham Lucas or go along to a meeting they are having at The Chequers on Tuesday 9 June at 7.30PM

Old Local Photos

I was recently given a CD with lots of old photos of the area - mostly of Marlow -but this of the Wheeler End cricket team outside The Brickmakers, which was presumably used as a pavilion when cricket was played on the common.

Shame that the common isn't really fit to use for cricket any more.

Easter Egg Hunt

Just to say how well that went yesterday - thanks very much to everyone who cae along and made in such a enjoyable day - and all at The Chequers for their help.

Special mention must go to Millie, Lucy and Emma for the printing and face painting - thanks so much for your help - roaring success with the little people (and some of the not so little for that matter.

Hopefully we'll have some photos to share shortly.

Easter Egg Hunt 2015

We're having a kids Easter Egg Hunt again this year - on Easter Monday - 6 April at 11.00AM.

The new landlord at The Chequers has offered use of the pub's front and back garden so we have decided to hold it there - rather than dodging the dog **** on the common.

We'll be serving tea and cakes as well so even if you've grown out of looking for Easter eggs, why not just come along for a cup of tea and a chat.

We're also hoping to have a painting session again after the success last year.

Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge

A large group of us - The Common People - did The Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge on Sunday to support Rennie Grove Hospice Care. It's an 18 mile walk along The Ridgeway from Princes Risborough to Ivinghoe Beacon taking in Whiteleaf Cross and Ivinghoe Beacon.

It was a brilliant effort all round - 16 people (plus numerous dogs) did the full 18 miles - sore legs on Monday morning!

The Common People are Tom Willett, Emma Willett, Sallie Belton, James Fisher, Julia Phaff, Charlie and Liz France, Fatiha Clark, Nigel and Katherine Joy, Paul Lack, Skye Bampton, William Joy, Olivia Joy, Sam Hill, Frankie Low, Charley Dibley, Momina Hanan and Veronica Checksfield.

Not forgetting Dexter, Daisy, Jasper, Florence, Polly and Crumpet - and you'll be glad to hear that the dogs got medals too for completing the walk.

Thanks very much for all the sponsorship;so far we have raised just over £2,000 for a very important charity.

Vintage Wheeler End Association Poster

At the picnic on Saturday, Graham brought along this amazing poster for the Wheeler End Association Annual Fete - dating back to 1961.

Might give us some ideas for next year - anyone for "Bowling for Pig" ?

Summer Picnic - Saturday 21 June

Just a brief note to say we are planning to hold the Wheeler End Village Picnic / Fun Day on Saturday 21 June this year - our very own Summer Solstice.

Hopefully this avoids clashing with any local events, major sporting events, school holidays etc and assuming the weather does better than last year it should be a enjoyable afternoon.

More details in the next few days and we'll be doing a drop of leaflets around the village but please try and come along if you can - the more the merrier.

As ever any volunteers who can help setting things up in the morning and clearing up afterwards would be gratefully appreciated.

Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge 2014

Full details of the Chiltern 3 Peaks Challenge are now on the website – click here – this year it's Sunday 14 September from Princes Risborough to Ivinghoe Beacon.

Quite a few people have expressed an interest – looks like we should have 10 or 15 people making up a team. Why not join us – and remember you don’t have to walk the full 18 miles – there are options to do 5 or 9 miles.

Easter Monday - Thanks All

Well we timed it perfectly for the weather - more by luck than judgement - and got a really good turn out.

Easter Egg Hunt

Hope we can get a good turnout tomorrow for the Easter Egg hunt on the common tomorrow morning  - just checked the weather forecast for Monday morning and it looks quite decent - certainly a lot better than last year.

Chilterns 3 Peaks Charity Walk

A couple of years back a small group of us did the Chilterns 3 Peaks Challenge to raise money for Rennie Grove Hospice Care - it proved a great day out and we raised about £1,000 for a very good cause.

This year the walk is on Sunday 14 September and we are hoping to get a decent group together - go on, give it a go - I hadn't walked 18 miles since I was at school and other than sore legs the next day it was most enjoyable.

Pencil the date in your diary and watch this space.
